Saffron Walden

Another museum trip was on the cards last week, and as we hadn't been to Saffron Walden for almost three years we decided to pay it another visit. A beautiful, idyllic looking town on north-west borders of Essex (almost in Hertfordshire), it was however a bit of a difficult drive as its not well sign-posted (;-/). But with that aside, we had a good time and visited the castle (which is being restored!), and the museum :)

A market town since 1141, the castle was built at a similar time (during the anarchy), by the 1st earl of Essex: Geoffrey de Mandeville, who wished to reinforce his power over the borough. Only the ruins remain today, but hopefully not for long :)
